My Dell laptop is completely shot, doesn't turn on, ok. However, I have allll of my music on there and I don't want to lose all of it. How can i extract the memory, considering it's broken and doesn't turn on?How to extract memory from Dell laptop that doesn't work? All of that stuff isn't in the "memory" but I know what you are saying. The hard drive is where you will need to lok. it will take a screw drivers and some exploring. go to youtube to look at a video on how to replace laptop hard drives. ths will teach you how to remove the old drive.
The next step is to get an external enclosure for your 2.5 in hard drive. here's a link to find those.

Have yourself or a handy man installt he old drive in the inclosure, usally involves dropping the drive in and screwing on the lid. then take the usb plug that comes with the enclosure kit and and hook it up to your. once oyur computer turns on you will be able to access information form the drive like it was a usb thumb drive. This includes music and pictures and the like.
Hope this helps
EDIT: there seams to be this dependance on having others do the work we our selves can easily do. the other answerers gave valid answers, but bestbuy or anyother company for that matter will charge oyu $75 on up to transfer the data using the same meathod I just described. the enclosure will cost you $15 and you will still get a usable external hard drive when oyu are done. plus the satisfaction of fixing a computer problem yourself. How to extract memory from Dell laptop that doesn't work?
I have some tech competition here...
You're going to need to extract your hard drive from your laptop. After that, there are cables that you can buy that go from SATA (etc.) to USB. You can plug that in to your computer and remove all you want and put it on your new hard drive. Or, if you want, that old hard drive can become a portable external hard drive, ex. a fragile one with that new cable. The cables are relatively cheap.
Note: Be sure to buy the right cable for your type of hard drive. How to extract memory from Dell laptop that doesn't work?Go to Dell support: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/g鈥?/a>
Enter your service tag and go take a look at the SERVICE manual !
Download it, find the section about removing/replacing the hard drive (it is illustrated and will help you retrieve your HD).
Next get an external enclosure in the correct format.
List of HD form factors ( A little primer ): With increasing sales of small computers having built in floppy-disk drives (FDDs), HDDs that would fit to the FDD mountings became desirable, and this lead to the evolution of the market towards drives with certain Form factors, initially derived from the sizes of 8", 5.25" and 3.5" floppy disk drives. Here are the most popular: 8 inches, 5.25 inches, 3.5 inches, 2.5 inches, 1.8 inches, 1 inch and now 0.85 inch (Toshiba announced this form factor in January 2004 for use in mobile phones)

This USB enclosure purchase ( they are not costly anymore ) would permit you to use your existing hard drive in any computer thus giving you the possibility of 1) getting your documents safely copied elsewhere ( I suggest making "two" copies for security ) and 2) afterwards, giving you an additional external drive to use ( just format it to bring it back to "like" new ).
