Why does this Dell machine tell me that there is no hard drive installed?
I'm trying to install Windows XP on a Dell machine with Vista on it. After I boot from the CD it tells me that there is no hard drive installed. I went into the settings and sure, enough it's there. I've tried purchasing a couple of different ones but they won't work with my Dell. I know its a pretty common problem for my computer. I was just wondering if anyone knew where i can go to purchase one besides directly from dell at a decent price. The separate operation assumably wouldn't have been able to start sending out free upgrades early, however, and they're likely looking at millions of individual, residential shipments to get out, while also needing to compile information from all the different manufacturers in a one time operation.

Can I use a Dell Win 7 upgrade for a computer that is not a Dell?
I got a Windows 7 upgrade from Dell for buying an eligible Vista laptop. I got the disk and on it is says "For Use Only as an Upgrade to a Qualifying Dell Windows 7 Upgrade Option PC" and the product key sticker has the usual Dell logo on it.
Will this actually work in any computer, or is there some filter at Microsoft that checks to ensure it is being activated on a Dell???? I have an old Dell Latitude that constantly drops the signal and freezes up my computer when I use my Dell Truemobile 1300 PC Wireless Card. The card is in my PCMCIA slot; if i take it out and put it back in again it works for a few minutes, and then freezes up again. Is there any way i can fix this? Would changing the BIOS work? If so, how do I do it? How can i stop my Dell Latitude from freezing up?Upgrading the BIOS could definetly help. I don't know what model Latitude you have, so I cannot tell you how to do it...some require a 3.5 inch floppy, so you may need an external USB floppy to do it.
Other BIOS upgrades are easy; just run the file in XP and the program automatically restarts the system and upgrades the BIOS on its own. However, older Dells do require a floppy, or running the file on a bootable CD in DOS.

I got this DELL Inspiron 2200 laptop and found out the reason it's not working is because the part that belongs on the motherboard spot PC148 is missing. On May 6th I ordered a laptop. I have decided I don't want it. I called to cancel but some Indian rep for Dell that the order is locked and there is no way to cancel. I have to wait until it is shipped and then refuse it.

His father agreed to pay me for it over 6 months, but now that my boyfriend and I are broken up, I don't feel comfortable with this arrangement anymore. Why not just delete unwanted files and uninstall unwanted applications? You can also use CCleaner (free download) to clean up all those pesky temp files that accumulate over time.
However if you simply MUST reinstall your OS you are going to need an external cd/dvd drive or make a bootable flash drive with your os files on it.
Just attatch the drive, put in your setup/recovery disks and reboot. Follow the instructios and Voila, shiny new system. :)

How can I buy a Dell Inspiron 1520 in the United Kingdom?
When I go onto the dell website and try to customize and order the Dell Inspiron 1520 it says that it is no longer available and the alternative is the 1525 although the 1525 does not have some of the specs I want that are in the 1520. My friend has a Dell Inspiron 1525, witha built-in webcam, and it has a mic on it..apparently, it is not disabled when she plugs in her mic and headset, and it picks up background noise and amplifies it so loud, we cannot even talk in Skype. I am looking to completely clear out my Dell Latitue D 620, How should I go about doing this?

Also, check the specs of your router - if its gigabit capable then putting a gigabit nic into it will give you extremely fast transfer speeds (assuming other computers are capable also). This is also a way to make the whole setup run very fast.

To choose the distribution, you need to know what you want to use the box for. If you are not planning on installing the X Windowing System, any distribution will do, more or less.
Personally I prefer Debian. I love it. But that's me, it may not be you. The best advice I can give anyone who is a relative Linux newbie, is get your hands on as many distributions as you can, and try them all. also check out damnsmalllinux, puppy linux, etc

Also, check the specs of your router - if its gigabit capable then putting a gigabit nic into it will give you extremely fast transfer speeds (assuming other computers are capable also). This is also a way to make the whole setup run very fast.
CPU is fine.
Thats about it. You may also want to look at running minixp, or using vlite to strip down the installation so that XP is a bit more zippy. But with a p4 and say 513-1gb ram it will run xp no problem. Particularly if all its doing is acting as a server.
But you have the basis of a pretty decent server there.
[edit] I dont know about the idea of Linux being an 'easy' server option. Ive used it with a few windows machines and it gave me nothing but headaches.
