How do I find out what type of battery my laptop can take? I have a Dell Inspiron 1501?

My battery life stinks now, they told me over the phone at Dell I have a 9-cell battery, I could have swron I had a 6-cell. But I was looking on eBay and I saw different batteries for sale. How do I know whats compatible with mine?

I have a dell 1501 and the battery life is not that great... though mine is 4 years old now.

Their support page will tell you (I looked) that for your laptop, the right battery is a TD347 (manufacturers number) or 312-0460 (Dell's number), and it is a 9 cell. It is compatible with the 1501, e1505, and 6400. And Dell will charge you $155. Ouch.



Now you can go to ebay or wherever and look for a battery that seems compatible. Generally, ebay vendors will list the laptop model their battery fits, so if it covers the same ones, you are on the right track. The part numbers may not match, but those are generally manufacturers numbers. Low risk of failure.



In the end, you can pay about 1/3 of the Dell price, at slight risk of a few things:



- Wrong one - hey, it's ebay, always a roll of the dice

- Poor physical fit - it may be remanufactured or a copied plastic housing

- Inferior battery cells. Dell sells very high quality batteries. The general marketplace has more variation.



So depending on your tolerance for risk, you can chose what you want to spend. Improve your odds by buying from an ebay vendor with lots of sales and a very high rating. If they are selling crap, many people will have said so. There are probably other places to buy the battery as well - do your Google research.
