I have a dell HDD and an IBM computer that doesn't have a working HDD. I tried to install my Dell (which sais WD800 on it if that means anything) in the IBM (which had a WD400 in it: still don't know if that means anything) but the hookups were all wrong.
The IBM has two small flat plugs to use but the Dell HDD requires one of those big gray flat cables. Sorry I'm less informed than I should be, hope you can help. How to hook up a Dell HDD to an IBM computer? The wide, flat cable is an IDE cable.
The thinner cable is a SATA cable.
So you have an old IDE hard drive from a Dell that you want to use to replace the SATA hard drive in the IBM computer. Sure, that would work, as long as the IBM computer has an IDE connection on the motherboard. If it doesn't, you'll need a SATA hard drive to replace the failed one with.
Look around on the board, and if you find one but need a cable, you can just pull out the cable that was in the Dell computer. When you connect the drive, make sure you connect it to the very ends of the cable with nothing plugged into the middle of the cable.
