I am in need of some crochet help.?

So my friend wants me to crochet him a Captain America Shield afghan

But I need suggestions, I have never wrote my own pattern and I am still fairly new to crocheting. Should I work in rounds then sew on a crocheted star? Or is there any free patterns I can alter? If any one can find a free pattern that is a round afghan with a star in the middle I can alter that would be awesome. I don't ever intend to sell patterns or work, I crochet for fun and to see the faces of my friends and family when they see what I made them.I am in need of some crochet help.?
you can graph that pic on 80x100 graph paper, count the squares as stitches. see my FB page A TOUCH OF LOVE for afghans i've made with the row count. email me if you'd like further help. good luck, cool pattern!I am in need of some crochet help.?
I would cross stitch the star onto the solid background. If you are looking to do it fast, make the center single crochet in the round:

Then to speed things up you could do the outer rings in double crochet. Here is a link explaining how to change colors.

Check out this site for the Star directions. You could make them bigger. I would then fill in between the stars with a triangle piece in blue. This would leave you with a round afghan to crochet. Or you could square it off after a few circle rows.

Good Luck and Enjoy!
Cool idea! I would work the red and white in the round and add the star. I'll bet you can find a pattern for the star online if you search for "crochet star motifs". Good luck!
