I'm trying to install Windows XP on a Dell machine with Vista on it. After I boot from the CD it tells me that there is no hard drive installed. I went into the settings and sure, enough it's there. You may have damaged your battery by pushing more juice through it/into it that was recommended. You may have damaged the charge sensing circuit on the motherboard by pumping higher than recommended voltage through it for an extended period of time. I believe they're actually being handled by a centralized operation that Microsoft contracted out to.



Microsoft was able to ship in bulk to electronics type stores in advance of the release date because they know not to sell things early.



The separate operation assumably wouldn't have been able to start sending out free upgrades early, however, and they're likely looking at millions of individual, residential shipments to get out, while also needing to compile information from all the different manufacturers in a one time operation.



I'd indeed give 'em a couple weeks, and know you won't be the only person throwing a major fit if they take longer than that. This time however rather than trying to repair you need to go into the startup repair options and choose to revert to factory settings. This option will only appear though if there is a partition on the computer with the operating system etc installed on it. Can I use a Dell Win 7 upgrade for a computer that is not a Dell?

I got a Windows 7 upgrade from Dell for buying an eligible Vista laptop. I got the disk and on it is says "For Use Only as an Upgrade to a Qualifying Dell Windows 7 Upgrade Option PC" and the product key sticker has the usual Dell logo on it.

Will this actually work in any computer, or is there some filter at Microsoft that checks to ensure it is being activated on a Dell???? So it'll boil down to whether a hardware filter exists at Microsoft's end for product activation, as you say, or whether the Win7 installation disc will refuse to run on a non-Dell machine.



In principle, you're violating the license agreement by using the Dell disc and key on a non-Dell machine, so if it's *alternatives* you want, I'm not going to give you any specifics. However, if you're going to break *one* law, I can't see any motivation you'd have to not break a *second* one.
